I can’t get enough of the Chesapeake Bay. It all started when my Grandparents retired in the late 60’s to Cambridge, Maryland off the Little Choptank River. They bought two acres of waterfront land and built their retirement home. It was a simple home with no air conditioning but it was all they needed and was the launching pad for my childhood Chesapeake adventures.
Crabbing was a mainstay activity and I learned my hand-lining techniques there with simple twine and chicken necks. In reality, the Crab Pot that was baited with chicken backs and thrown off of the end of the pier caught the dinner and the hand-lining was really just for fun. But we took it very seriously.
I have vivid memories of swimming off the banks of the Little Choptank and getting my feet stuck in the black muck on the bottom. I never really got used to that feeling, but it didn’t stop us from swimming, while trying to minimize the exposure to the jellyfish.
Thirty-some years have gone by and my Grandparents have passed and their home sold long ago. Since then there have been many weekends and vacation breaks spent on the Bay, and I hope to conjure up some of those memories in this blog as well as recount present-day happenings now that I have my own Bayfront home on Tilghman Island in Talbot County. My favorite place in the world.

Photo Note: The above Osprey is one of a family that made their home on the end of our pier in Tilghman after it was damaged by Hurricane Isabel. I’ll share some “family photos” of the Osprey and their offspring in a future posting.
